Help with funeral costs in Australia

Funerals in Australia are expensive, often arriving at the worst possible financial moment. Several sources of assistance exist — here is what to look for and who to contact.

What a funeral typically costs

Costs vary significantly by city and provider. Under the Australian Consumer Law, funeral homes must provide a transparent, itemised price list if you ask. You are not required to purchase a package — you can select individual services.

DVA funeral benefit

If the deceased was a veteran receiving DVA support, a funeral benefit may be available:

Apply through the Department of Veterans' Affairs at 1800 555 254 or dva.gov.au. There are time limits, so apply promptly.

Centrelink advance payment

If you receive an income support payment such as the Age Pension or JobSeeker, you may be able to apply for an advance payment to help cover funeral costs. This is repaid through small reductions in your future payments. Call Services Australia on 132 300 to ask about eligibility.

State government and council assistance

Some states and territories have assistance programmes for families who cannot afford a funeral. Availability and amounts vary. Contact your state's Department of Communities, Human Services, or equivalent. Some local councils also maintain lists of charitable or community assistance funds.

Pre-paid funeral plans

If the deceased had a pre-paid funeral plan, contact the funeral home directly. Pre-paid plans are regulated in most states to protect the funds. Ask for the plan documentation — it should specify what is covered and what, if anything, remains to be paid.

If you cannot cover the cost

Direct cremation — collection, cremation, and return of ashes with no formal service — is the most affordable option, typically from around $1,500 to $3,500. It is a dignified choice, not a lesser one. A memorial or celebration of life can be held separately at any time, at no additional cost to a funeral home.

If no family member is able to pay and no assets exist in the estate, the state or territory government is responsible for the burial or cremation. Contact your state's public health authority or hospital social work team for guidance.

Get itemised written quotes from at least two or three funeral homes before committing. Prices for the same services can vary by thousands of dollars within the same city.
